Low-time preference in parenting.
How I Apply Low Time Preference in Parenting
When I first heard the phrase “low time preference,” I thought it only applied to money — save more, spend less, think long-term. But the more I internalized it through Bitcoin, the more I realized it goes far deeper than finances. It touches everything. Especially how I parent.
Bitcoin didn’t just change how I save — it changed how I see my role as a father, the kind of legacy I want to leave, and how I show up for my kids every day.
Parenting in a High Time Preference World
We live in a world that worships speed and convenience. Fast food. Fast answers. Fast screens to quiet the noise. And while those things might feel efficient in the moment, they often rob us — and our kids — of something much greater: formation.
High time preference parenting is reactive. It's all about the now — “What can I do to make this moment easier?”
But low time preference parenting asks:
“What seeds am I planting that will bear fruit in 5, 10, or even 50 years?”
Bitcoin Taught Me to Zoom Out — So Did Parenting
Bitcoin taught me to think in decades, not days. To invest, not just consume. To steward, not just survive.
Parenting reinforced that in the most humbling way. My children are not short-term projects. They're eternal souls. They don’t need a dad who’s constantly busy or distracted. They need a dad who’s present, patient, and planting seeds for the long haul.
What Low Time Preference Parenting Looks Like for Me
It’s not about being perfect — far from it. But here’s how the Bitcoin mindset shows up in how I raise my kids:
We homeschool. Because shaping their hearts and minds is more important than outsourcing convenience.
We read more than we scroll. Because depth beats dopamine.
We value discipline over ease. Boundaries & responsibility — these things pay off long after the whining fades.
We talk about truth. Because I want them to know there is such a thing as objective truth — and it’s worth building your life on.
We pray together. Because the greatest inheritance I can leave isn’t money — it’s faith and formation.
The Long Game
There are no shortcuts to raising good humans. It’s slow work. Quiet work. Sometimes thankless. But that’s exactly why it matters. Fiat culture wants quick results, flashy outcomes, and outsourced responsibility. But low time preference parenting is about faithfulness — not flash.
Parenting Is Proof-of-Work
Every bedtime story, every discipline moment, every shared meal — it’s all part of the investment. It’s the proof-of-work of family. And just like Bitcoin, it can’t be faked. It’s costly, and it’s worth it.
I’m not here to raise compliant consumers. I’m here to raise sovereign, truth-loving, faithful children who will stand firm when the world demands they compromise.
Stay tuned and stay sovreign.
